About Gothenburg

Gothenburg gives a feeling of being much bigger than Oslo, albeit having a little fewer inhabitants. It is famuous for world's biggest cinnamon rolls! Besides that, it offers a botanic garden, which allows you to finally touch grass!

But as usually, make use of your rented car and stop at natural places.

What to do in Gothenburg

1. Swing in Moss

Moss is a peninsula closer to Oslo than Gothenburg. I wonder how it got its name 🤷🏻‍♀️ Following a very narrow road, we reached a parking spot, which was the origin to the hiking trail towards the coast.

And what a wonderful trail it was! So calm, so green, so full of nature! At some point, two roads diverged in a green, not yellow wood.

At the end, we reached the Bredebukt coast. There was a swing there! And since we were there during Easter, the stones at the beach were shaped and colourful like easter eggs.

2. Walk the many streets ...

This is not Haga, but a random street.

... and observe old-timer trams. Do not miss the Haga street – a district with cosy cafés, shops and restaurants, and most importantly, world's biggest cinammon rolls!

3. Go up

In Gothenburg, you can go upstairs in the middle of the street. Or if you prefer, go uphill to visit a fortrees. From there, you can observe the city from above. It's up to you what you want to see and in which direction.

4. Eat the world's biggest cinnamon roll

Sweden is famous for its Fika tradition. Similar to the British tea-time, Sweds have Fika every day. But multiple times a day. A piece of pastry, usually accompanied with coffee or a similar warm drink. A very famous pastry type is the cinnamon roll.

But because the buns you usually buy are too small (seriously, who can stop after just one?), the people from Gothenburg decided during the previous century to bake the biggest one! Nowadays, multiple bakeries/cafés make them, some of them are better than others.

5. Feel the spring in Gothenburg Botanical Garden

Towards the end of March, the only inkling of spring in Umeå was the fake-spring. It might be called vårvinter in Swedish, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Basically, the temperatures rise, the sun is strong, spring is just around the corner ... until night-time when it freezes back, and at any point, another shipment of snow can appear at any time.

That's why we were so glad to finally feel spring in Gothenburg! The botanical garden offers numerous flowers, plants, trees, bushes. Furthermore, it is not a flat park, but rather in multiple levels with hills; it has a relief – something truly unique. We enjoyed the warm sun, chilling on a rock at the top of a small hill without jackets.

6. On your way back, stop at Brahehus Slottsruin

Ruins of a fortress. Allow the lightning of the weather to play with colours. Once again, this is just one suggestion; you will see many perfect stops along the way. Just stop at a safe place and enjoy the beauty!
