💎 Hidden gems remaining: 4
Cusco is the gateway to the most popular destination of Peru: Machu Picchu. But it does not mean it is not beautiful enough to stop there for multiple days. From a rich tourist centre to all the natural wonders in the neighbourhood, here you will encounter English-speking Peruvians with the highest probability.

Even though the first building you see when entering the site is a christhian temple, this space was of a huge meaning for the Incas. The temple is stretching 10 km in each direction, however it is only partially visible. What can be seen are cultural terraces where 3500 subspecies of potato used to be grown. Beneath them, tunnels are said to stretch, giving access to various religious chambers.
The tribal leader lived here. But why such a big house, you might ask? Because he had more than 300 wives. That's roughly one per day of each year. The reason was of course to maintain the royal bloodline.

If you look at the clothes of the Incas, they pop out thanks to their vibrant colours. Here, we were shown the procedure to obtain the thread from raw wool. To get the pigments, they use natural ingredients, ranging from chicha, flowers to murdering innocent bugs found in cacti.
Now owned by the Maras people, they were discovered and built by the Incas. First, fresh water springs in the mountains, flowing through various stones, collecting salt on the way. Then, it is filled into numerous layered terraced ponds and evaporated by the heat provided by the sun. What remains are salt crystalls.
Four types of salt are produced: pink salt (used in cooking), black salt (premium kitchen salt for steaks), medical salt (for bathing) and salt flower (which is, in contrast to Slovenian solni cvet, fine grained).
They remind us of Pamukkale

Another structure built by the Incas (spoiler: everything in Peru is said to have been built by the Incas). The cultural terraces here were a real agriultural laboratory! They experimented with planting crops at different altitudes to find the recipe for perfection. Interestingly, the produce of potato increases with altitude!
Nowadays, the bottom can only be accessed on August 1st, the day of Pachamama.
Never finished (although started) by the Incas, there's a special temple at the top of this pyramid. It is called both the Temple of Sun and the Temple of Shade. But mostly shade, as sun is supposed to hit the temple only twice a year – on the days of solstice.
On that special day, the nose of the Inca face at the edge of the mountain nearby allows the sunrays to reach the relief on the temple, causing shadows to appear.
Do you see the Inca face in the background? We neither.

The name originates from the word "pisco", the name of 40-percent alcoholic drink. Divided into many sectors (only 4 can be visited by mortals like us), it is the most robbed Incan site. People thought they would find gold in the graveyards, but little did they know that the lower class were burried here.
The separating line between classes was the possession of a dog. If a family had a dog (peruvian no-fur dog), they were seen as more powerful. By the way, it can be very cold here!
Since Cusco is probably the most touristy city in Peru, it is important for it to have a central market where tourists can buy everything from pullovers to souvenirs and try various street food, buy fruit, vegetables, meat and drink local juice. It is full of locals as well – as the daily menu only costs S/. 5 here.
It is preferred by locals over supermarkets for its price, quality, value and freshness. Since it was our final destination, we had to stop here to buy some gifts. (Fun fact: we forgot all the foody-ones either at one of our hosts or at the airport security.)
Ten minutes of taxi away, there's a steak house offering tasty steaks for reasonable prices. If you try the so-called Corte Uruguayo Bife Angosto Select (400 g), you will not be disappointed. Furthermore, you will be lifted into heaven. The meat is so soft it melts in your mouth when you touch it with your tongue. It tastes incredible. Take a steak and enjoy!
Urugway ftw!
