Mykonos is the most expensive island of all Cyclades. It is knows as a popular honeymoon destination, so be prepared to pay some more, especially if travelling in high season as we did. But that does not mean that you cannot find affordable accommodation and taverns. Otherwise, Mykonos is very beautiful. Fabrika is glorious, shining in marble blue colours and the sea is just a pleasure to either look at or to swim in.

The Mykonos was the first island we visited on our Cyclades trip, so it was all on it to impress us and – oh boy – it did. When we arrived at the airport, we were first random checked for COVID-19. Reaching our accommodation by bus would require us to travel all the way to Fabrika and catching another bus towards Platis Gialos so instead we opted for going by foot as the half-hour walk was the fastest and we were still full of energy.
Hotel Kastelakia
At the arrival at the Hotel Kastelakia, the host Mike greeted us with a can of ice-cold coke. He also kindly explained us the surroundings and advised us some trips around the island. Than he showed us a perfect small room with a shared terrace and a small private balcony.
After we settled down and refreshed a tad, we went for a 30-minute walk to the main town of Mykonos. Our eyes got immediately caught by with-a-style crafted buildings with rounded corners and blue emphases. Other than fabulous streets there are two other things that would catch anyone's attention. Firstly well-known Mykonos Windmills standing strong on steep rocky surface above the see, which is the second thing you will surley notice apart from previously mentioned streets.
The see is glowing in all the shades of blue and is pleasure either to look at or to swim in it. Speaking of swimming, there are few beaches available to do so – one in Mykonos town and others souther in Platis Gialos and Ornos.
View from the coast of Mykonos town
Apart from the main town of Mykonos, there is also a bit smaller village Ano Mera located in the middle of the island. It is reachable by bus (1,80 €) starting at the bus station Old port in Mykonos town.
In Ano Mera we did not just stick to the touristic streets but did a little bit of research around and would recommend it to others to. Just walk the roads and get to know the way locals live there. Maybe walk to a higher spot, for example the damaged windmills, to see the village from above.

Then you can also walk to the Platis Gialos if you are accomodated close to it like we were or take a bus to see the other part of the island and maybe jump into clear water to refresh yourself.

Spaghetti carbonara & Moussaka
We ate at the local Andreas & Maria taverna which was just 5 minutes away. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced (~8 € a dish).
If we were in the Mykonos town, we would probably want to try other restaurants as well, but if you are staying near this taverna it is a must.
